Technical Expertise
Sawyer Law Group practices intellectual property law predominantly in the fields of high technology. Our attorneys and agents are trained in the areas of science and engineering, many of them possessing engineering degrees. The firm has prepared and prosecuted thousands of patents, trademarks, and copyrights across a broad array of specialities. Below, you will find a description of those specialties (adapted from Wikipedia entries for reference), along with a listing of clients for whom we have performed work therein.
Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS)
MEMS is the technology of very small mechanical devices driven by electricity. MEMS devices are defined as die-level components of first-level packaging, and include pressure sensors, accelerometers, gyroscopes, microphones, digital mirror displays, micro fluidic devices. While MEMS manufacturing continues to be dominated by semiconductor equipment, there is a migration to new tools, including etch and bonding for certain MEMS applications.
We have performed intellectual property work in the field of MEMS for InvenSense among others. (Examples of our issued MEMS related patents)
Computer Systems
Computer systems involve programmable machines designed to sequentially and automatically carry out a sequence of arithmetic or logical operations. A computer typically consists of some form of memory for data storage, a processing unit to manage to manage the order of operations and peripheral devices to allow information to be entered from an external source. The computer’s processing unit executes a series of instructions that make the compute read, manipulate and then store the data.
We have performed intellectual property work in the field of Computer Systems for IBM, Lenovo, Apple, and Cadence among others. (Examples of our issued Computer Systems related patents)

Software Algorithms & Architectures
Computer software comprises computer programs, procedures and documentation that perform some tasks on a computer system. This includes application software such as word processors which perform productive tasks for users, system software such as operating systems, which interface with hardware to provide the necessary services for application software, and middleware which controls and co-ordinates distributed systems.
We have performed intellectual property work in the field of Software for IBM, Apple Computer, Cadence, Lenovo among others. (Examples of our issued Software Architecture related patents)
Electronics / Electronic Circuits
Electronics is the study of the flow of charge through various materials and devices such as semiconductors, resistors, inductors, capacitors, nano-structures and vacuum tubes. The design and construction of electronic circuits to solve practical problems is an essential technique in the fields of electronic engineering and computer engineering.
We have performed intellectual property work in the field of Electronics for IBM, Apple Computer, Boeing, Lenovo, Cadence among others. (Examples of our issued Electronics related patents)
Electronic Design Automation (EDA)
EDA is a category of software tools for designing electronic systems such as printed circuit boards and integrated circuits. The tools work together in a design flow that chip designers use to design and analyze entire semiconductor chips. EDA for electronics has rapidly increased in importance with the with the continuous scaling of semiconductor technology.
We have performed intellectual property work in the field of EDA for Cadence and LSI Logic among others. (Examples of our issued EDA related patents)
Wireless & Communications
Wireless technology and communications may be used to transfer information over short distances or long distances. It encompasses various types of fixed, mobile, and portable two-ray radios, cellular telephones, PDAs, GPS units, satellites and wireless networking. Wireless operations permits services, such as long range communications, that are impossible or impractical to implement with the use of wires.
We have performed intellectual property work in the field of Wireless & Communications for Boeing and Ralink among others. (Examples of our issued Wireless & Communications related patents)
Flash Memory Devices
Flash memory is a non-volatile (meaning no power is needed to maintain the information stored in the chip) computer storage chip that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed. Typical flash memory devices include memory cards, USB flash drives, MP3 players and solid-state hard drives for general computing storage. Flash memory is extremely durable as it can withstand high temperatures, intense pressures and even water immersion.
We have performed intellectual property work in the field of Flash Memory Devices for Kingston and Atmel among others. (Examples of our issued Flash Memory Devices related patents)
Semiconductor Design & Processing
Semiconductors are a solid materials that have electrical conductivity in between a conductor and an insulator; The degree of conductivity can vary over a wide range, either permanently or dynamically. Semiconductor devices—electronic components made of semiconductor materials, are essential in modern consumer electronics, including computers, mobile phones, and digital audio players. Silicon is used to create most semiconductors commercially, but dozens of other materials are used as well.
We have performed intellectual property work in the field of Semiconductors for Cadence, IBM, Micrel among others. (Examples of our issued Flash Memory Devices related patents)
Networking
A computer network is a group of interconnected computers. Based on the scale networks can be classified as Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN), Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) etc. Computer networks can also be classified according to the hardware technology that is used to connect the individual devices in the network such as Optical fibre, Ethernet, Wireless LAN, HomePNA, or Power line communication.
